aspenhill's blog: Plugging away on the weekly to do list

Posted on Apr 4, 2018 1:06 PM

I've spent two full days in the gardens plugging away on the weekly to do list that I set for myself on Sunday night. I am making myself follow it so when I encounter something that I normally would get sidetracked with, I just add it to the to do list for next week and keep on with the task at hand. At night, I look to see if anything I added should bump up in priority and if it does, I'll rearrange the list for this week. It is really helping me to stay focused. Today the weather isn't cooperating. We had rain this morning, which is now followed by heavy winds. I'm actually kind of glad for the weather conditions that are forcing me to stay inside today. My muscles, especially my hamstrings and whatever muscle that is where the back of your thighs meets your rear end, are really sore after going so gung ho with the garden chores. Getting to a sitting position, climbing up and down stairs, and trying to get socks and shoes on are the worst. Lots of hot baths with Epsom salts and several doses of advil or aleve doesn't seem to be helping. The muscles loosen up a bit after I get started, but as soon as I stop the soreness creeps right back. It is a pitiful sight Big Grin

So far this week:
I finished the early spring lawn treatment on the sod that I put down last fall in the front yard. I got the crabgrass weed preventer and the lime down. The broadcast spreader isn't working right though. I noticed that one of the three holes in the bottom of the spreader won't close at all, so you can't shut it off and you can't adjust the broadcast rate effectively. The area is so small, just 1500 square feet, that I think a hand held spreader will work fine and picked one up when I was in town yesterday. I'll use that for the front lawn in the future and let Mike deal with fixing the broadcast spreader for using elsewhere.

I worked on the hellebores. The fall leaves accumulate around each plant and the hellebores leaves from last year themselves need to be clipped off because they are a ratty mess. I got through about 3/4 of them, but still have 2 patches of 3-5 plants each and the BIG patch by the birdhouse that was the first patch I planted. As I was working on them, I was getting pretty pleased with myself that the collection that I have been adding to for about 5 or 6 years now is starting to make an impact. They look so much better after they've been cleaned up and really stand out in the gardens now that you can see them properly.

I worked on the spring cleanup of the front yard island bed. I went to town and purchased more bagged compost and pine bark mini nuggets for it. Then I raked out the edges where Mike has run over it with his trucks/trailers and the holes that the dogs have dug trying to get at moles. After that, I got all the compost dumped out and raked smooth. I still need to get the holly-tone spread out around the mountain laurel and get the mulch spread over the entire bed.

I worked on the spring cleanup of the front yard foundation beds. I got the leaves raked from the upper section and hauled off to the compost pile. There is still a half day or more of work to do there.

At this rate, I am pretty optimistic that I'll be able to finish this week's to do list. Maybe...
