African Violet in trouble

African Violet in trouble
Posted by Bonnie from Illinois on 2005-10-03 03:44:00

A friend asked me to look after her African Violet. What I found is terrible. The roots are basically dried up and gone, but the leaves are still alive. What can I do to bring this poor little guy back?

Hi Bonnie, i would repot it with some new african violet soil, they like to be rootbound so no need for a big pot. Then water it from the bottom with room temp. water and let the roots soak up the water. they don't like to get water on they're leaves. then let dry out somewhat before watering again. Bright spot(east or south window for winter) they also like a high humidity so near a kitchen sink can be an ideal spot. you can also take a mature leaf and stick it in slightly moist soil and start a new plant (some people put it an eggcup of water first and then plant it when you can see roots) it seems to work either way. I hope this helps you out, good luck! p.s. they also like leftover tea once in a while if you drink it.
