growing boxes - wood treatment

growing boxes - wood treatment
Posted by Dave from PA/Zone 6 on 2008-09-28 09:20:00

We're working on setting up a veggy garden for next season. We're building 3 wood boxes which are each 6.5ft x 2ft x 11in and plan on filling these with soil and growing in them.

The wood is untreated. My question is whether or not I should use some sort of sealant/treatment on the wood to protect it as it will be outside exposed to the elements.

My concern was with introducing harmful chemicals into the soil by using a weather treatment on the wood.

Is it ok to treat the wood? Is there a particular kind of treatment to use which would be best/most safe?

Also, any other tips for a first time gardener taking this approach?
