Border gardens are
simply those that border something else. That something might be the
edge of the property, a stone wall, a hedgerow, a walkway, or any other
landscape element. Border gardens tend to be relatively long and narrow,
though this isnt always the case. As with island beds, consider
whether theyll be viewed all around or from just one side.
Border gardens can
be quite formal, with neat rows of plants flanking a sidewalk. Or they
can be very natural looking, creating a gentle transition between lawn
and wild areas. Because they complement other landscape features, border
gardens are a great place for new perennial gardeners to experiment.
Sample Garden Plan for a Sunny Border Garden
- borders walkway
and stone wall
- full sun except
for some afternoon shade along wall
- USDA Zones 5-9.
In Zone 4, substitute Sedum 'Matrona' for Shasta daisy.
