5 Perennials for Shade

Hosta
(Hosta spp.)

Although hosta sprout tall spikes of flowers, they are primarily grown for their striking leaves. Leaf color ranges from deep blue green to bright chartreuse, and variegated forms are common.

Ferns
(species vary)

The gray-green color of the fronds on this fern contrast with their burgundy midribs. Although they look delicate, in the right spot ferns are durable and reliable.

Foamflower
(Tiarella cordifolia)

Low-growing foliage is accented by tall spikes of fluffy flowers. On some cultivars the leaves turn an attractive reddish bronze color in fall.

Bleeding heart
(Dicentra)

This plant would be worth growing just for its delicate foliage. However, it also graces the garden with arching stems of striking heart-shaped flowers.

Spiderwort
(Tradescantia virginiana
or T. andersoniana
)

This clump-forming plant has arching, straplike foliage and striking three-petaled flowers. Tolerates wet soil.
