The painting is an example of the technique called pointillism - of using dots to create the image. This daylily bloom has tiny red imbedded dots, or specks. The intensity of the dots is different on each bloom and has the effect of changing the color perception of each bloom as more buff/peach to a more salmon color. So multiple blooms on the same plant can appear a slightly different color.
