Welcome to the NGA Rose forum. We are a group of rose gardeners and rose fans who enjoy sharing our experience, knowledge, and photos. We stay friends by avoiding political discussions, obscene language, and displays of "rose snobbery." Many members of our group are quite knowledgeable and will be glad to take a stab at answering your questions and identifying your mystery roses.

You can click "Watch this forum" on the upper right-hand side of the Rose Forum main page and you'll always be updated on any new threads or posts.

This rose was named after the hybridizer's late wife, Alice Patterson Jerabek, who passed away in March 1990 from breast cancer. She was a beloved grandmother of a giant gaggle of admiring grandchildren. We all miss her dearly.
  • You may wonder about the color vs the name. The blooms of Pink Don Juan are definitely on the purple end of pink, especially as they age. Please know that the photos I post haven't been doctored, but they were taken with a variety of digital and phone cameras.

I found Wild Spice at Lowe's, many years ago. Sadly, I lost that house and this rose along with it. I remember that it had a very strong clove scent, which was quite nice. Although my photos don't show it, the flowers did open flat sometimes.
  • Despite its name referring to Virginia, it is native from Newfoundland to Virginia over to Alabama and up into Missouri. It has alternate, pinnately compound, glossy leaves with 7 to 9 leaflets. The foliage gets a good fall color of yellow to orange-red to crimson. The canes are reddish with mainly paired prickles. The pink flowers are fragrant, borne singly or in two or three together and are 2 to 2.5 inches across blooming in late May into June. The red fruit glistens, matures late, and persists all winter. It grows about 4 to 6 feet high and ground suckers. It is recommended as doing well in sandy soils, including along the shore, but also does fine in silty or clay soils.
