We have two growing seasons, a cool and a warm season, with different bulbs performing in each. Most bulbs including iris are planted in the fall (late September through October) for spring bloom. Summer bloomers, such as glads and canna, are planted in the spring (March). I've included links to the National Gardening Association's Southwestern reports that covers some different bulbs that you might enjoy.
