What you saw may not have been the cause of the damage but could be any insect that just happened to find the damage on the tree trunk and was investigating it as a potential future home. The damage might be blistering from winter weather, a physical injury from a weed whacker, or damage from boring insects. It's difficult to diagnose without the opportunity to investigate further. I'd just take a wait and see attitude. A healthy tree will callous over an injury or seal off the damaged area. As long as your tree is putting out new growth, I don't think it's health has been compromised.
