You do not need to trim a dappled willow but the new growth is where the most color is so I'd recommend pruning it back. Early spring is the best time to prune. You can reach into the center of the plant and completely remove some of the oldest stems. New ones will grow and they will have the beautiful variegated foliage. You can also shorten the remaining stems to induce a bushy shrub instead of a tall, tree like shrub. Willows don't mind being pruned. Just wait until you see it begin to bud out in the spring and then prune it back.
