i have a medium sized lantanna and a small verbena..both are sparse and leggy instead of bushy. should i cut them wasy down and let them start to fill out?

It's best not to prune in the midst of summer heat, which is stressful to the plant because it reduces all its photosynthesizing (food-making) ability. Trim selectively, cutting back dead or damaged stems to its point of origin, taking off no more than one-third of the plant. It's best to do serious "cutting back" in early spring, before new growth begins.
