Provide soil with good drainage and grow herbs in full sun, either in the garden or pots. They don't like overly wet soil (roots will rot), nor do they need as organically rich a soil as vegetables do, so a good quality potting soil or average improved garden soil will be fine. Fertilizer generally isn't required either. If growing in containers, check daily for moisture - stick your finger into the soil and if the top inch is dry, it's time to water. Soil in containers tends to dry out faster than you might expect on a hot summer's day so daily checking is a good rule to follow. Also, containers might be better with morning and early afternoon sun exposure with protection from hot afternoon sun. Good luck!
