| What is Aztec Grass? I see it used on landscaping shows on TV frequently. I'm in zone 6...will it grow here? |
| "Aztec Grass" does seem to be a favorite of those TV landscapers doesn't it? It's botanical name is Ophiopogon jaburan, and it is a border grass which is very similar to Liriope or "Monkey Grass". Aztec Grass is in the same family as the also widely popular Mondo Grass. This versatile grass grows in sun or shade, requires very little maintenance and is somewhat drought tolerant. Guess all of those are good reasons for it's popularity. According to my references, it is only perennial to zone 8, however, I have grown it successfully as a perennial in zone 6. Your results may vary. Something similar to try is variegated Liriope (Liriope muscari 'Varigatum') it is very similar and is definitely hardy to zone 6. |
