How I know the best way to deadhead a perennial - pinching off the flower or cut to the ground?

It depends upon the plant but usually you just remove the flower where it joins the stem. In plants such as petunias, you can take some of the stem, as well. This will encourage multiple stems to grow and each will produce a flower. Best wishes with your plants!
