Just a guess, But It appears you may have purchased a weeping cherry which has the characteristics you describe. If the majority of the branches curve over and droop that may be the case. You can also tell if it is a weeping cherry if you can identify the graft point. The graft is the place where the weeping variety was grafted to a standard stem. The Cherry prefers full sun for its location as well.
