I've planted marigolds twice in the backyard and they've died. I used fertilizer, water regularly and used potting soil to plant. Why do they keep dying?

Sometimes weather can be a factor in the success or failure of plants - even tough marigolds! I'd try again but before planting work some compost or other organic matter into the planting bed to help the soil drain well yet hold just the right amount of water. Be sure your planting in full sun (or at least 6 hours a day) Then plant your marigolds. I think they will thrive. I hope this helps and good luck!
