I know they do not need nitrogen, but what do I feed them and how often?

Japanese maples thrive well without the need for fertilizer. But if you have poor soil conditions and believe a fertilizer will help, I would purchase a slow release tree fertilizer for your tree. You can purchase a bag of tree fertilizer spikes from your local Home Depot that are slow-release and can help the growth and development of your Japanese Maple. But once planted watering and mulching around the base of the tree are typically enough to maintain some moisture and health of your maple. Hope this helps and good luck!
