|I'm expecting a red twig dogwood to arrive soon and would like info on the growth habits on them. How fast do they grow and do they spread out?
|Red-twigged dogwoods grow fast and they certainly do spread, especially in a rich moist soil. You should plan for at least six feet high and wide even if you expect to prune for maximum stem color by cutting it back hard every spring or so. These shrubs have a loose multistemmed shape and spread by underground stems and by rooting where branches touch the ground. Where happy, they will create a thicket of sorts unless controlled. Enjoy your dogwood -- the winter color is lovely!
