why did my friends pink and white stargazer liily's come up orange this year?

What a shock! To be honest, I suspect what has happened is that a vigorous seedling akin to the wild lilies has usurped the lily you planted. "Stargazer" is indeed a gorgeous plant and in my experience it maintains its color, as do the other named varieties. On the other hand, some tend to revert to the original orange color. To avoid future seedlings you might try deadheading the lilies after they bloom and before they have time to set seed. To do this, remove the individual flowers being sure to nip the entire bloom off the plant inlcuding the little "nub" that will form the seeds.
