I'm eliminating grass in the front yard and planning a Florida-friendly flower bed in the center, with cypress mulch around the bed. Would you recommend bark nugget mulch or lava rock for the central bed? Soil is mostly sand to which bags of potting soil has been added. Thanks.

That's mostly a matter of personal preference, but I prefer bark mulch because it doesn't heat up in direct sun as much as rock. Also, if not too late, incorporate compost or well-aged manure into the soil as well to boost fertility, moisture-holding capacity and drainage. Best of luck with your new flower bed.
