I have 2 large (7foot) lorapetalums that are becoming gangly. I would like to cut them down to about 4 feet and get them to fill out some. What is the safest way to do this without harming the bushes?

I'd go with the less stressful method of reducing the size of the plants. Prune them back by one third now; next spring prune them back by one third again. If you still need to reduce their sizes, prune them back as much as one third again next summer. Best wishes with your garden!
