I live in the the west central area of New Jersey along the Delaware river. I would like to plant a rose shrub/hedge along the sides of my house to hide cellar windows and I always loved the way houses in Nantucket look. What is the best rose to plant.

Your chances of success with this will depend on several factors; first off, roses require plenty of sun and do best with good air circulation, so they may not work on all sides of your house. Next, even the most trouble-free roses tend to be attacked by Japanese beetles which can render them a bit ugly. Your selection will also be determined by the ultimate space you have to fill. Dependable roses are available in a wide range of sizes ranging from the diminutive to monstrously huge. Last of all there is the color choice! While you examine your options, you might wish to look at some basic books about roses and their care. One I like is Roses for Dummies by Lance Walheim (ISBN 0-7645-5031-4). Good luck with your project!
