What causes house plants to get mold or something white on top of the soil? How do I get rid of it?

Containerized plants can develop a salt build up on the soil surface and this can either be flooded out with water or you can scrape it off the top (I use a spoon). If you scrape it off you can replace the soil you scraped off with fresh new soil.
