Yellow jackets are most active from June through October but the population generally dies off and the nest is abandoned when the weather gets cold. If the nest doesn't fall down on its own, knock it down in December or January. If you have an area in your landscape where yellow jackets frequent year after year, be on the lookout next spring for nest building activity. When you see them start to build a nest, use a strong stream of water from the hose to knock it down. Do this everyday and they will move on to a more protected spot. If you don't knock it down they will finish the nest, move in, and then protect it all summer long.
