pruning a magnolia tree - Knowledgebase Question

I need to reshape a magnolia tree. The top 12 feet were lost in an ice storm. The tree has gotten so large it needs a good 2-3 feet off all of the way around. When, how & where do I trim it at. Thank you, Donna.

Now is a good time to prune your magnolia. I'd prune everything back to a more symmetrical shape, pruning just in front of a leaf or leaf scar. This is where new growth will appear. Good luck with your pruning project.
