|You'll need to repair the soil structure and loosen it up before you can get grass to grow. You can either rototill it up, add some compost or aged manure, and rototill it again or you can try aerating the soil with a core aerator. This machine removes one inch by three inch plugs from the ground. After aerating spread sand or compost over the top of the area and water it in well. The sand or compost will fill the holes left by the plugs and help loosen the soil. Once you've repaired the soil you can lay sod or broadcast grass seeds. Good luck with your project!
