I am from California where almost anything can be grown. I recently moved to Texas and my husband and I want to plant fruit trees in our backyard but have been told that not many fruit trees will bear fruit here. Can you please tell us what types of fruit will grow here in Houston Texas. We have clay soil.

There are quite a few fruit trees that do well in Houston. It will be important to provide them good drainage as you will experience some long, rainy spells. Raised beds is the easiest way to accomplish this.

Among the better choices are pears (European and Oriental), persimmons, Satsuma oranges, kumquats, and figs. You have one of the best fruit testing facilities in the state at your local Extension Office at Bear Creek Park. Their phone number is 713-855-5600.

Good luck in your new home.
