I live on long island, is it worth trying major repairs to my lawn while it's so hot? Also, i have a bare spot that isn't level, what should I use to level it? Plain topsoil?

You're right - it's too hot to do anything other than water and mow your lawn. Wait until this fall to do major renovations. You can use topsoil to level low areas. Rake the soil first to break up the surface then lay your topsoil. This way there won't be a physical barrier between the two soil types which might cause drainage problems down the road. Best wishes with your renovation project.
