I saw in a Sunset reference book that oleanders were recommended to plant next to a pool but I was told by several people that oleanders roots will eventually burrow into the cement siding of the pool and cause cracking and other damages. Is this true? I live in Phoenix Arizona.

Oleanders do have tenacious root systems so I wouldn't suggest adding them to a poolside planting. Also, all parts of the plant are poisonous, so if you have kids and animals galloping around the pool, there are better choices. Here's a local reference from U of AZ Maricopa County Cooperative Extension with a list of pool plants, as well as characteristics to watch out for. ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/az1058.html. Thanks for writing.
