Avocado With Browning Leaves - Knowledgebase Question

I have an avocado tree, several years old and about 2 or 3 feet tall, in a 5-gallon pot outside. Almost all of the leaves are brown and crumbling on the edges, reaching well into the leaf, so that the only healthy leaf tissue is a little leaf-shaped patch about the size of my thumb. What's probably wrong, and what can I do to fix it?

Your tree is suffering from either drought stress or fertilizer burn. A plant that wants to be a tree will quickly exhibit drought stress in a container. This can show up as tip and margin browning of the leaves. Excess fertilizing (salt buildup) can burn roots and result in burning of leaf margins as well.

Hope this helps!
