Blueberries benefit from pruning, especially plants that are over 3-4 years old. Proper pruning lets sunshine into the bushes, which aids in ripening the berries. Late winter is the ideal time to prune. Cut out a few of the thick older canes and thin out branches that are crowding each other. Then prune off the twiggy ends of some of the branches, to allow new wood to develop in the spring. You can keep your blueberry shrubs neat in appearance and as productive as possible by pruning lightly each year.
