Can I successfully seperate into smaller plants, and relocate a large hydrangea that has overgrown its space?

You should be able to divide your hydrangea by digging straight down through the root system. As long as each division has both roots and stems attached it will develop into a healthy new plant. Wait until after your hydrangea has finished blooming to transplant it to another garden spot. Enjoy your hydrangeas.
