my purple asters have all turned a dark color and the leaves crumble----last year they were beautiful---what disease
may have destroyed them

Sounds like a fungal disease, and might be the final stages of powdery mildew. There's not much you can do to save your plants at this stage. I'd remove them from the garden and if you decide to plant them again, plant them in a different spot in the garden just to make sure the disease isn't overwintering in the soil.
