How do you trim a new crape myrtle to grow into a nice tree and not look like a shrub?

You can shape your crape myrtle in the spring, just as new growth begins. Remove the lower branches so it has a bare trunk and then shorten the branches on the top to produce a canopy. It may take years but eventually you'll have an attractive tree instead of an overgrown bush.
