Lawn For Shady Yard - Knowledgebase Question

We recently purchased a home in the 'Piney Woods' north of Houston. The back yard has only partial shade and moist soil. We have trimmed branches from the trees to allow in more light, but it's only partial shade at best. What kind of grass can we get to grow here and when should we plant the new lawn?

The most shade tolerant turf for your area is St. Augustine. You can begin setting it out in March or April. Set the mower at least 2 1/2 to 3" high to allow longer leaf blades to catch light and support turf growth.

Trimming limbs to increase the light was a good idea.

Good luck with your new lawn!
