About 20 years ago a 2 ft. ring of dead grass started in my lawn where a crab apple tree had died during the winter. It is now an arc about a foot wide and 40ft. wide advancing slowly slowly across the lawn. The grass behind, and in front of, the dead line is healthy and green. What is it and is there anything I can do to cure it? Thanks.

Sounds odd doesn't it? I suspect that the roots of the crab apple are decomposing and as they do, they heat up. This heat may be just enough to bother the roots of your turf. Eventually it will stop, but in the meantime, it probably looks very strange!
