|Early spring just as new growth begins is the best time to dig and divide hostas. If you do it now, the plants will wilt but they will recover later this summer. The roots of hostas grow into a tight mass and are nearly impossible to separate the way you'd do with other perennials so the best technique is to dig the entire plant up and cut or hack through the rootmass with a shovel or hatchet (really!). As long as each division has both roots and leaves, it will grow into a new plant. Replant as soon as possible and water them in well. good luck with your project!
