When should a White River Birch be pruned? What is the procedure for pruning this tree?

Because of the threat of bronze birch borer insects you should not prune a river birch in the summertime. Instead, wait until winter or early spring when the wounds will heal quickly and the borers are not yet active. You can prune to shape by removing excess branches and by shortening the remaining branches.
