My new neighbors just cut down all their trees and our northern facing backyard is now bright-hot and unbearable. I would like to know which are the fastest growing, disease and pest resistent shade trees to plant. I am in the process of amending our compacted soil back there (thanks to your wonderful advice). I can't bear unrelenting summer heat, my dogs won't even stay out anymore! So grateful!

Sorry you lost your shade. I had the same thing happen to me! Leyland cypresses are about the fastest growing evergreens you can plant. They're hardy and easy to grow. Be sure to get them off to a good start by watering them deeply once each week during the summer season. Best wishes with your landscape.
