|Sounds like insects are feeding on your plants. Scales or mealybugs can exude a sticky substance called honeydew which turns black as it ages. The way to get rid of the black sooty mold is to control the insects. You can spray with an insecticide or use a soil drench to control the pests. Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control is one such product but there are others on the market. Best wishes with your shrubs.
