Sounds like a water stress issue, either too much or too little. If your soil doesn't drain quickly, the roots may be sitting in soggy soil which can suffocate them. If you don't water at all, the roots can dry out and the plant will drop its leaves and the stems will dry up. Be careful with watering and try pruning back the affected stems. If the roots are healthy you'll see new growth in a few weeks. Hope your broom recovers!
