Japanese Maple - Knowledgebase Question

my japanese maple has beautiful leaves on it but the base of the tree near the ground has crevices that make it look unstable/like it mught fall- what can I do

If you're concerned your tree migh topple over you can stake it upright. The support the stake provides will help the trunk grow thick and strong. The stake doesn't have to be tall, just high enough to hold the lower part of the trunk upright. Best wishes with your maple.
