I live in Brick N.J. and I start my vegetable and flower plants from seeds. Every year I question just when is the best time to start my plants. Needless to say sometimes I start too early or to late! Just cannot get it right, help!

Nothing like frost to keep gardeners on their toes! Actually, your experience is pretty normal. Your last frost date will usually run within an average range figured for your general area, but that will not necessarily reflect the actual experience for your particular microclimate and garden spot. At best it is a guide to what to expect in any given year, so you might want to keep some row covers or frost blankets available as a precaution. You might also want to keep a record of the frost patterns at your house to see if you can fine tune the average for your own location. Having said that, your local County Extension (349-1427) should have the averages for both the last spring frost and first fall frost for your area. Good luck with your seeds!
