Is there a hedge/barrier plant that grows fast in shade and doesn't freeze in winter?

Camellia, Nandina, leatherleaf mahonia, rhododendron and leatherleaf viburnum will all tolerate shade and are reasonably hardy to cold temperatures. Maybe one of these will work for you. Hope so.
