An office park just sheared their variegated flax to a height of 6

Variegated flax takes well to pruning and I'm sure the flax was pruned to control the size. It isn't necessary unless the plants are overgrown but it won't hurt them, either. I don't think I'd prune them back quite so severely, though. Just prune yours by one third to one half if you want to reduce their size.
