Insects will cause the damage you describe so keep checking until you find the culprits. Sometimes caterpillars can be difficult to detect (they can also cause lacy leaves on fruit trees) so check the upper and lower sides of the leaves several times a day. Eventually you'll find the culprits! Best wishes with your trees!
