I purchased a self pollinating cherry tree that supposedly had three types of cherries grafted together. It was a dwarf. It is 5 years old. Each year it sprouts 1-4 cherries that the birds pick before ripening. I tried identifying a leaf to discover the type of tree to no avail. The leaves show little variance. The tree has 3 branches that grow up.Tree is very narrow. What type & why no fruit?

The only way to identify the tree at this point is through the fruits. Cherry tree flowers look identical throughout the cultivars but the fruits will be slightly different and that's the best way (for an expert) to determine the kind you are growing. Cherry trees do need a second type of cherry in order to produce fruit so if you have a four-way tree it's likely you'll have at least two different varieties. However, cherry trees should flower abundantly each spring. If you're not getting lots of flowers and lots of fruits, the tree is not getting the sunshine, water and fertilizer it craves. Make sure it is in full sunshine (8 hours per day), receives a thorough soaking once or twice a week during the summertime (once a week the rest of the year) and that you are feeding it each spring with a time release fruit tree fertilizer. Try pruning the branches back in the winter months or very early spring to encourage more branches and the potential for more flowers and fruit. And, when the cherries do develop, pick them and take them to your local cooperative extension office for help with identification - or check to see if there is a California Fruit Growers Assn. in Modesto. These groups of people are backyard fruit growers and are very knowledgable about fruit trees. Best wishes with your cherry tree.
