I planted 2 basil plants in my vegetable garden. They have small purple buds on them. WHEN am I supposed to harvest them? HOW do I harvest them? Thanks.

You can harvest basil leaves when they are large enough. As long as you leave some foliage on the plants they will produce more leaves and you can continually harvest the leaves. Just pick or cut off a few leaves at a time and more will grow. It's important to keep the plant from flowering so if you see what looks like a flower stalk, pinch it off right away. If your plants flower and set seeds they will die. Picking off a few leaves every day or two will keep your plant busy developing new leaves. Hope this clarifies things for you.
