My cucumbers came out oddly shaped this year... fat on one end, tapered on the other, more like a squash. What did I do wrong?

Poor pollination can make cucumbers look more like gourds than cukes but water stress can play a part, too. If a flower isn't completely pollinated, due to weather or lack of insect activity, not all parts of the fruit will develop completely. Some parts can grow more rapidly than others, resulting in oddly shaped fruits. Be sure to water deeply and consistently - droughty conditions can also cause misshapen cucumbers. They're still edible, just not as attractive as they could be.
