My David never in 4 years got mildew but this year, it did. What can I do?

How disappointing! David is one of the most resistant phlox varieties around. I suspect that the weather was just too much for him to tolerate. I would prune it back to remove the worst of the disease and try spraying with a copper based fungicide (such as Microcop). For even more resistance remember not to overcrowd phlox as good air circulation helps prevent mildew, and be sure to clean up all plant material and discard it at the end of the season. You might even consider rotating where you plant your phlox each year to help prevent build-up over time. Best wishes with your phlox.
